Chain O’Lakes Association to hold Food Drive @ Annual Meeting

The Waupaca Chain O’Lakes Association will hold its annual meeting Saturday, June 26 at 9:00 AM in Marden Center, Wisconsin Veterans Home, King.  Guest speakers will be Representative Kevin Petersen and Sheriff Brad Hardel.  Annual reports will be given and any other business that comes before the board will be discussed.  Last year’s annual meeting minutes can be viewed at waupacachainolakes.org.

The Association is having a food drive for the Waupaca Area Food Pantry in conjunction with its annual meeting.  The food drive is in memory of Marge Goerman who died early this year after a brave battle with cancer.  According to Marge’s husband Bill, “Marge woke up one morning in late fall of 2008 and said that she had a dream about the food drive to help the good people of Waupaca in need.”  Marge organized last summer’s Association food drive.  Members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the annual meeting, and the food will be delivered to the Pantry the same day

Any community member who knew Marge Goerman is encouraged to make a food or monetary donation in her memory.  Non-perishable food items may be dropped off at the Pantry, 413 S Main Street any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning between 9-11 AM.  Check payable to the Waupaca Area Food Pantry may be mailed to the Main Street address.

Zebra Mussels Found In Waupaca Chain O'Lakes

Waupaca, WI.  Zebra Mussel adults have been found in the Waupaca Chain of Lakes in Waupaca, County.  As a result, the Department of Natural Resources has added the Waupaca Chain to the list of Zebra Mussel infested waters and urges boaters to take precautions to prevent spreading invasive species to other lakes.

Zebra Mussels attach to hard surfaces and form dense clusters.  They can dessimate native mussel populations, decrease the oxygen that fish and other aquatic species need, and worsen algae blooms.  They filter feed the plankton, which in turn clears the water and allows sunlight to penetrate deeper, allowing more weed growth and fish to go deeper. They also clog boat engines and intake pipes for utilities and industrial facilities.  Their sharp shells can cut the feet of swimmers and beach walkers.

As a result of this discovery, the DNR will post “Exotic Species Advisory” signs with Zebra Mussel decals at boat landings. The signs will notify the public of the presence of Zebra Mussels and the need to take precautions to prevent spreading Zebra Mussels to other waters.  DNR will also work with local groups and units of government to increase public awareness and outreach efforts to control the spread of Zebra Mussels.

“The key to preventing the spread of Zebra Mussels and other aquatic invasive species is to not transport anything – plants, animals, mud, or water – from one water body to another,” says Brenda Nordin, Aquatic Invasive Species coordinator for DNR’s Northeast Region.  Mud and water can harbor seeds, microscopic eggs and larvae, and Zebra Mussels can be attached to aquatic plants.

Everyone can help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by knowing what they look like and reporting suspected new infestations to the local DNR. Wisconsin law now requires that before launching and before leaving the landing you must..."

·Inspect boats, trailers, and equipment

·Remove all attached aquatic plants and animals

·Drain all water from boats, vehicles, and equipment

·Dispose of unwanted live bait in the trash*

·Never Move plants or live fish away from a waterbody*

*Limited exceptions apply, visit http://dnr.wi.gov/ and search “bait laws”

For more information on the discovery of Zebra Mussels in the Waupaca Chain or on how to prevent the spread of Zebra Mussels and other aquatic invasive species contact Brenda Nordin at 920-662-5435.

Pier Registration:
Do I Need to Register?

Piers are a popular focus for boating and waterfront recreation. What pier owners need to know is that they can continue to place their existing piers on the water, the same as they’ve been doing for years.

The majority of existing piers already meet size limits and will not need a permit or state review.

Most larger existing piers can be grandfathered in under a free registration process that must be completed by April 2011.

Piers first put in the water before February 2004 that cannot be grandfathered will need to be downsized or apply for a FREE individual permit with state review.

Piers first put in the water after February 2004 must meet the size limits outlined in the Pier Planner or their owners may seek an individual permit with a state review.

Registration is currently available by printing, filling out, and mailing or faxing a completed hard copy paper form.
